The newer 2017 version Shield controller uses Bluetooth and you should be able to connect it through bluetooth.If you use Steam connect your controller via bluetooth and go to the settings in Steam to set it up. Once plugged in, Windows will see the controller as a USB XInput Controller if you install the drivers some way on a non Nvidia GPU Machine as the Nvidia GeForce Experiance app is what installs the driver for the controller. The older controller uses Wifi Direct to connect wirelessly to the Nvidia Shield Devices. For the older Shield Controller you have to use the USB cord and connect the controller to the PC/Laptop that way.
